Hyperpigmentation and VI Peels

Let’s explore hyperpigmentation and chemical peels. Specifically, we want to go over VI Peels! We love the results our clients get from VI Peels.

We see over and over clients who come in with hyperpigmentation concerns, then get a VI Peel, and then feel so great about their skin!

We love to see it! VI peels are among our favorite treatments because clients love the improvement in tone, brightness, and clarity of their skin.

What Are VI Peels?

VI Peel is a chemical peel used to improve skin texture, tone, and clarity. It is a medical-grade chemical peel that exfoliates the skin and stimulates collagen production. The peel is used to treat a variety of skin concerns, such as acne, wrinkles, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation, including sun damage. The peel can be applied to the face, but we also treat the neck, chest, and body. VI Peel is a minimally invasive treatment.

The VI Peels are so effective because of the blend of ingredients. VI Peels have the following active ingredients:

  1. Trichloroacetic Acid (TCA): TCA is a chemical exfoliant that removes the top layers of dead skin cells to reveal smoother, brighter skin.

  2. Retinoic Acid (Vitamin A): Retinoic acid, which is a form of vitamin A. This helps to stimulate collagen production and improve the texture of the skin.

  3. Salicylic Acid: Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid that helps to unclog pores and exfoliate the skin.

  4. Phenol: Phenol is a powerful exfoliant that can help improve fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone.

  5. L-Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C): L-ascorbic acid is a form of vitamin C that helps to brighten the skin and protect it from environmental damage.

  6. Hydroquinone: Hydroquinone is a skin-lightening agent that helps to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and sun damage.

  7. Kojic Acid: Kojic acid is another skin-lightening agent that can help to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation.

  8. Glutathione: Glutathione is an antioxidant that helps to protect the skin from environmental damage and improve its overall health.

There are 5 different formulations of VI Peels. These include VI Peel Original, Advanced, Purify, Purify with Precision Plus, and Precision Plus. When deciding which one would be right for you, we look at your skin and the issues you might have, the current treatments you’ve been using, and your goals, timeline, and budget.

What Is Hyperpigmentation?

Hyperpigmentation is a common skin condition characterized by darkening certain skin areas, usually in patches or spots. It occurs when the skin produces too much melanin, the pigment that gives our skin its color. This excess melanin can be triggered by several factors, including:

  1. Sun exposure: Overexposure to the sun’s UV rays can cause the skin to produce more melanin as a form of protection, developing dark spots or patches.

  2. Hormonal changes: Hormonal changes during pregnancy, menopause, or while taking certain medications can cause the skin to produce more melanin, resulting in the development of hyperpigmentation.

  3. Inflammation: Skin inflammation caused by acne, eczema, or other skin conditions can trigger the production of excess melanin, leading to hyperpigmentation.

  4. Injuries or trauma: Injuries to the skin, such as cuts, burns, or surgery, can cause hyperpigmentation as the skin heals.

Melasma vs. Sun Spots

Two common causes of hyperpigmentation are melasma and sunspots. Understanding the difference between these two is essential to know how to treat and prevent further discoloration.

Sun spots are flat, brown spots that appear on areas of the skin that have been frequently exposed to the sun, such as the face, hands, and arms. They are caused by sun damage and are more common in people with fair skin. While these are generally harmless, they can contribute to looking older than you might feel.

On the other hand, melasma is a type of hyperpigmentation characterized by larger patches of dark, irregularly shaped pigmentation that appear on the face, usually on the cheeks, forehead, and upper lip.

Melasma is caused by a combination of hormonal changes and sun exposure, and it is more common in pregnant women or taking oral contraceptives. The exact cause of melasma is not fully understood, but it is thought to be related to changes in hormone levels that stimulate melanin production in the skin.

Using A VI Peel For Hyperpigmentation

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again…VI Peels are an excellent treatment option for hyperpigmentation. This is what will happen when you come to Pur Aesthetics and Wellness for a VI Peel:

  1. Welcome: Come in with a clean face! We’ll get you comfortable and then get your treatment started.

  2. Cleansing: We use agents to ensure skin is cleansed thoroughly to remove any makeup, oil, or debris.

  3. Prepping: A prepping solution is applied to the skin to help remove residual oils and ensure the skin is ready to receive the peel solution.

  4. Application of the peel solution: The VI Peel solution is applied to the skin using a brush or sponge. You will actually leave our office with the peel still on your face. (Don’t worry, though; we tell you exactly how to follow up).

  5. Post-peel care: When you are done with your peel, we send you home with post-peel care. This includes written directions, wipes, and cleansers you should use, calming lotion, and even SPF!

When you leave our office, this is a timeline of what you can expect:

  • Day 1: You’ll go home with the peel still on.  You’ll wash this off after 4 hours.

  • Day 2: Your skin may start to feel tight and may begin to peel or flake. Resist the urge to pick or peel the skin. Using the moisturizer, we send you home with can help!

  • Day 3-4: The skin may continue to peel or flake, and some patients may experience dryness or rough texture. You can use tiny scissors to cut excess skin…but it is crucial that you don’t peel or pick at the skin that is flaking.

  • Day 5-7: Your skin should start healing and look more radiant, with a smoother texture and tone. However, there may still be dryness or flakiness; continue to avoid picking or peeling the skin.

  • Day 8-14: The results of the VI Peel treatment should be visible. Your skin should have a smoother, brighter, and more even tone with reduced hyperpigmentation!
